Annually, because of their independent contractor status, officials should review the insurance issues and needs that surround the active official. Because most of us enjoy officiating and have never known any official to need insurance of any type, we dismiss the thought and grab our whistle to begin another year.
The GLASRA Executive Board discussed the idea of obtaining liability insurance for all members and concluded that through a variety of other sources, some included with your registration for USSF or MHSAA, basic coverage is already provided to GLASRA members who are registered officials. Included within this document are an array of additional insurance purchase options that GLASRA members may select on an individual basis to broaden their individual coverage. GLASRA does not endorse or recommend any coverage over another. Consult with your attorney or insurance agent to see what would be best for your situation. Below is a recap of what coverage you may already have, and other options available to you.
- United Stated Soccer Federation (USSF) – With your registration card and patch from USSF, a Certificate of Insurance was also enclosed. It shows that each official has General Liability coverage up to $1 million for each occurrence. Coverage applies to United State Soccer Federation member referees who have been certified by US Soccer, but only while acting in their capacity as referees (including assistance referees, fourth officials, assessors, instructors and assignors) during US Soccer sanctioned camps or clinics, and matches between US Soccer affiliated teams and leagues. Note: Lansing Area Women’s Soccer (LAWS) is currently the only league we schedule for that is not US Soccer certified.
- Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA)
- Other Options Available
- National Association of Sports Officials (NASO) – For $79 a year, a NASO membership entitles active officials to a general liability program that offers coverage up to a $3 million aggregate per event. Coverage is per occurrence (not claims made) protection for liability resulting from bodily injury, property damage, personal injury and advertising injury, and includes costs to defend against such claims as specified in the policy. This insurance is primary to other valid collectible insurance covering the same loss, except in certain limited instances which are set forth in the policy. The coverage also has an Assault Protection component that includes: Initial Consultation and up to $3,000 legal services reimbursement, $5,000 Accident-Medical Coverage, and $500 game-fee protection.

- National Federation Officials Association (NFOA) – For $16 a year, through the National Federation of State High School Association, high school officials can join NFOA and be covered with General Liability for claims of bodily liability, property damage, and personal and advertising injury. Limits of coverage are $1 million per occurrence with no general aggregate limitation. Coverage includes defense costs and is excess of any other valid and collectible insurance. No liability coverage is provided for members while driving or riding in any auto. The coverage also includes Accident Medical, Catastrophic Medical, Accidental Death & Dismemberment, and Fee Loss.
In order for coverage to apply, each official must be a registered official with a member state association. Coverage is not limited to high school activities only. It can also apply to youth or recreation leagues, but the sport must be recognized for high school participation by the state high school association.
