GLASRA referee wins Michigan and Region II Young Female Referee of the Year
Raechel Conine of Leslie, MI, was recognized as 2011 Michigan Young Female Referee of the Year at the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) banquet in Southfield, MI on February 25, 2012. She traveled to Boston, MA for the February 17, 2012, US Youth Soccer’s (USYSA) National Awards Gala to receive the Region II award. Conine was nominated by her local organization, Greater Lansing Area Soccer Referee Association (GLASRA). Alex Smith, GLASRA President, said, “Raechel worked incredibly hard for this award and continues our tradition of recruiting and training excellent referees.”
MSYSA selected Conine from nominees submitted by each of the state’s referee associations. It advanced her nomination to Region Il in which Michigan is one of 14 mid-West states.
Conine was selected for the Region II award based upon her involvement in Michigan Referee Academy, Region II Olympic Development Program (ODP), State Cup Finals, upgrading to a Grade 7 referee as well as her community service. She is the first Michigan referee to win this honor.
Conine said of her Boston trip, “It was a great experience! I’m extremely honored to be recognized for something this big.”
Francisco “Chico” Villarruel, State Youth Referee Administrator, is pleased with her progress and continues to offer additional opportunities for Raechel’s development. She has been selected to officiate at the Michigan State Cup Finals again this year, Region II Championships in June, and attend a National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (NISOA) Training Camp.
“Chico and countless other mentors have been great to me. They have taught me a lot,” said Conine, “I don’t know where I would be without them!” She acknowledged her family’s involvement, “We travel to numerous states for my sister’s Elite Club National League games. My mom referees at these, I was fortunate enough to tag along and officiate some very high level games at a young age.”

Certification and Recertification
GLASRA Referee Selected for National Championship
GLASRA Referee Jonathan McCoy was selected from more than 200 officials at the Region II Tournament to referee at the 2011 U.S. Youth National Tournament in Phoenix, AZ (July 26-31). He is one of only two Michigan referees selected for the tournament. This year marks the second year in a row that GLASRA has had one of its officials selected for Nationals. In 2010, GLASRA referee Korey Carter was selected for the prestigious tournament. Jonathan McCoy is an MSU senior currently studying Kinesiology which helps him as a referee. "It (kinesiology) helps me understand how to make my movements more efficient and effective allowing me to perform at a higher level." For officials at this level, fitness is a huge part of their officiating. During Regionals, McCoy ran 34 miles and averaged 6.8 miles per match officiated in sunny, 80 degree weather. Speaking about the level of fitness required, he said, "You're exhausted. It's even harder than running a marathon because you are stopping and starting all the time. In a marathon, you get to stay at one steady pace." He continued, "If you aren't in tip-top shape, you simply aren't going to be in position to make the important calls."
This is his 11th year as a referee and he has spent the past three years as a GLASRA member. During that time, he has upgraded to become a grade 6 referee.
When asked what officials should be doing if they want to officate at Nationals, McCoy recommends working hard to build a strong foundation. "You have to improve basic mechanics and learn how to be professional. Also, you have to find a person or group of people at a higher level to mentor you to help make you a better referee."
This past spring, GLASRA expanded its mentoring program to include the 720 game CASL season. GLASRA will be expanding its referee mentoring program to five additional leagues in the fall. Other GLASRA officials who attended Region II Regionals included Korey Carter, Joe Gazda and Bob Burgee. Dean Kimmith served as an assessor and Francisco Villarruel served as tournament staff and assessor.

• When you register, make sure you receive a Payment Acknowledgement email; also make sure that the email has the class location, date, and time.
• The Registration Help on the right of this screen will answer most of your questions.
• Read the "Registration Process" in each class section for instructions on how to register for the class online.
• Summer classes will certify students for the Fall 2010 and the whole 2011 year. More Entry and Bridge classes will be scheduled soon.
• Entry and Bridge classes cost $60. No minimum age for Entry class, must be 14 to take Bridge class.
• If you wish to take a Bridge class and you took the Entry class about the same year, the system may not allow you to register as a "Referee"; however, you will be able to register by mail. See Registration Help for instructions.

GLASRA In-Service
- GLASRA will hold an in-service August 20th, 7pm, at the MHSAA building, located at 1661 Ramblewood Drive in East Lansing. We have some great video from high school matches and a good time will be had by all, whether you work High School or not.
GLASRA Fitness Run
This run is mandatory for High School officials to be a Member in Good Standing. It is also required for USSF officials grade 7 or higher (lower number) and for those who are upgrading.
